Three weeks ago, I let you know about all the things you could be doing in Newton, New Jersey to make a full day of it before and after my Meet the Author book reading/discussion/signing event at Black Dog Books on July 15 from 6:30 – 9:00pm. Today, I’m super-excited to let you know about some great specials, discounts, coupons, and offers available exclusively for my guests.
While Irish-inspired literature and Mexican-inspired food might seem out of keeping, I can assure you: it’s not!
Ancient Irish legend says (and modern archaeology confirms) that the Milesians (the ancestors of all “true” Irishmen) came to Ireland from Spain!
And while in Ireland in 2015, I had the pleasure of enjoying some Irish-Spanish-Mexican fusion cuisine in the old medieval city of Kerry, and it was out-of-this-world!
More importantly, as a descendant of immigrants myself, I think it’s absolutely in keeping with the great American experience of bringing together world cultures to create something truly unique in human history!
Thirty years ago, Lazaro Gonzalez left Oaxaca, Mexico with a dream of living and working in the United States. It’s a dream my own great-grandparents had when they packed up and left Ireland to cross the Atlantic, and it’s a dream many of our parents and grandparents have had before immigrating to America in search of a better life. Whether they were fleeing persecution or seeking a better financial future, the United States is a nation built on such dreams and the hard-working people with the courage to pursue them.
Two years ago, Lazaro and his family opened Mi Rancho Mexican Grill at 195 Spring Street in Newton, and they’ve been going strong ever since. As I sat down with Lazaro and his wife this past week, while my mouth watered to the sweet and savory smells drifting from his kitchen, I was delighted to learn that they’re doing so well, they just inked a deal to take over the neighboring storefront and expand their business!
Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner from a menu of traditional Southern Mexican cuisine, Mi Rancho Mexican Grill has everything you love about Mexican food, from huevos con chorizo to get your day started, to tortas, sopes, ceviches, tacos, enchiladas, burritos, and a mouthwatering array of desserts!
So I’m very proud to announce that Lazaro and his family have graciously volunteered to provide appetizers for my Meet the Author event, and there will be a little something special waiting at Mi Rancho for anyone inclined to stop over at Mi Rancho before, during, or after my event! Just stop in at Black Dog Books on Saturday July 15 to see what special surprise Lazaro has up his sleeves!

Rebecca Burkhardt and Brianna Berghorn will have a full house over at the Barrel House on Saturday night! With Gary Puckett and the Union Gap playing at Newton Theater at 8pm, they’re expecting a busy 6-8pm dinner crowd. But stop into Black Dog Books early on Saturday July 15, and we’ll have some coupons you can use toward dinner or drinks before you come back over for my Meet the Author reading, discussion, and signing!
The Barrel House has also graciously agreed to offer a barrel-aged whiskey Manhattan cocktail, the Hedge King Special! They’ll be serving it all night, so just ask for it by name and let them know I sent you!
Or better yet, join me for the after-party! Rebecca has generously offered us the private back room at the Barrel House to continue the discussion after the event at Black Dog Books winds down! I’m sending my own daughter home with grandma, and can’t wait to taste that barrel-aged whiskey Manhattan!
As an added bonus, local acoustic musicians “Doubleday” will be performing at The Barrel House that same night! Their influences include Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney/the Beatles, the Dave Matthews Band, the Grateful Dead, Patrick Fitzsimmons, Linda Chorney, Bob Marley, Jack Johnson, Jon Bon Jovi, and Todd Sheaffer! Doubleday will be laying down live original music and classic covers in the front room, while we party like Hedge Kings in the back room! Get a taste for Doubleday at the Barrel House, then check out their show on July 18 at the Bowery Electric in NYC!

Erin Mary’s 5-Star review ain’t wrong: “Charcoal Moons is seriously awesome. The art is made by the two owners (who are totally awesome) and they can customize greeting cards, clothing, furniture, art, etc. The vibe is really cool in there and you can pretty much buy ANYONE a gift here. They even tell you what clothing will look best on your body type. This place is incredible! Definitely stop in!”
